Performances
Types of Performances
Dastak Theatre, Patna works across a diverse range of theatrical forms and subjects. Its performance practice combines literature, folk traditions, contemporary social concerns and theatrical experimentation, with each production developing its own performance language.
Literary Adaptations
A significant part of Dastak’s repertoire is built around bringing important literary works to the stage. The group transforms stories, novels, poetry and other literary texts into theatrical experiences.
- Raag Darbari — a theatrical adaptation of Shrilal Shukla’s celebrated satirical novel; a large-scale social and political satire exploring rural society, institutions and post-Independence India.
- Ram Sajeevan Ki Prem Katha — based on a story by Uday Prakash, representing Dastak’s engagement with contemporary Hindi literature.
- Paul Gomra Ka Scooter — based on Uday Prakash’s story, bringing contemporary social reality and literary storytelling to the stage.
- Jamun Ka Ped — based on Krishna Chander’s well-known satirical story, representing humour, satire and social commentary.
- Nithalle Ki Diary — based on Harishankar Parsai’s writing, using satire and humour to examine society and everyday realities.
Folk and Rural Theatre
Dastak also explores folk culture, rural life, oral traditions, music and community-based storytelling, often reinterpreting them through a contemporary stage language.
- Panchlight — a musical adaptation of Phanishwar Nath Renu’s story, portraying village life through humour, music, romance, community relationships and social questions such as caste and prejudice.
- Teesri Kasam Urf Mare Gaye Gulfaam — based on Renu’s stories and rooted in the world of rural Bihar, folk culture and traditional performance traditions, combining folk, classical and modern theatrical languages.

Satire is another important part of Dastak’s performance vocabulary. These productions use humour, irony and theatrical exaggeration to examine social structures, institutions and human behaviour.

Modern and Contemporary Drama
Dastak also stages established modern dramatic texts alongside contemporary interpretations.
- Ashadh Ka Ek Din — Mohan Rakesh’s landmark modern Hindi play, representing modern literary drama and psychological relationships.
- Ek Aur Durghatna — based on Dario Fo, representing political humour, contemporary social commentary and experimental dramatic form.

- Andha Yug — Dharamvir Bharati’s poetic drama, bringing myth, history, war and contemporary human questions into a modern theatrical framework.
Experimental and Alternative Performance
Dastak also uses theatre as a space for experimentation with form, narrative, acting, movement, music, voice and stagecraft. Its repertoire includes solo performances, adaptations of poetry and prose, non-traditional theatrical structures and productions that combine different performance traditions.
The group’s “Chand Tanha Asmaan Tanha”, for example, demonstrates an actor – Meena Kumari’s biography can become a complete solo theatrical performance similarly with play “Patkatha”, how a long poem can become a complete solo performance while productions such as Panchlight and Teesri Kasam explore the possibilities of combining literary material with music, folk elements and ensemble performance.
Dastak’s Performance Identity
Across these different forms, Dastak does not follow a single fixed style. Its approach is to move between literature and performance, tradition and contemporary practice, realism and theatricality, humour and serious social inquiry.
Whether it is a literary adaptation, folk-inspired production, satire, social drama, poetic performance or experimental work, Dastak seeks to develop a distinctive theatrical language through acting, voice, movement, music, design, ensemble work and contemporary interpretation.
This diversity is central to Dastak’s identity: different stories demand different theatrical forms, and every production becomes an opportunity to explore a new way of making theatre.
