About Dastak
A group of creative people
Established on 2 December 2002, Dastak is a professional theatre organization committed to meaningful theatre, creative experimentation, artist development, and socially relevant theatrical practice through continuous training and workshops. Under the guidance of Punj Prakash, who trained in Acting at the National School of Drama (NSD), New Delhi, Dastak has remained actively engaged for more than two decades in a continuous process of training, research, experimentation, creation, and theatrical production.
Throughout its journey, Dastak has explored and absorbed various traditions, styles, and contemporary experimental approaches to theatre, gradually developing its own distinctive theatrical language. Alongside plays, the organization has also used poetry, short stories, novels, and essays as sources for stage adaptations. Rather than merely presenting these literary works on stage, Dastak seeks to understand their content, language, emotional essence, and dramatic possibilities, and then adapt and recreate them in accordance with the requirements of theatre.
For Dastak, every work demands its own distinct theatrical language. With this approach, the organization has experimented with various dimensions of acting, body, voice, music, rhythm, movement, lighting, stage structure, and visual imagination. Its exploration ranges from traditional theatrical forms to contemporary and experimental languages, allowing Dastak to remain open to diverse possibilities rather than being confined to any single style or aesthetic.
Over the course of its journey, Dastak has presented more than 25 theatrical productions across various cities, towns, and villages in India, with numerous performances of its productions. The organization has worked on adaptations and re-creations of works by acclaimed writers from India and abroad, while also developing original theatrical works and engaging with contemporary subjects. The selection of a work has never been based solely on its literary significance; an equally important consideration has been its potential to establish a dialogue with human beings, society, and the experiences of our times.
Dastak regards theatre not merely as a performing art but as a continuous creative process that contributes to the inner development of human beings. Training is therefore an integral part of its theatrical practice. Alongside acting, emphasis is placed on physical training, voice and speech, music, rhythm, movement, literature, discipline, and collective creation, with the aim of developing the physical, intellectual, emotional, and artistic abilities of performers. At Dastak, training is not limited to a short-term course; it is a continuous process of practice, study, discipline, and stage experience.
With this vision, Dastak seeks to create a creative environment for emerging actors, writers, directors, designers, and other theatre practitioners, where they can experiment, take risks, learn from failures, and develop their individual artistic expression. For the organization, theatre is fundamentally an act of collective creation, in which every participant—from actor, writer, and director to musician, lighting and set designer, and technical collaborator—plays an important creative role.
Dastak’s theatre practice is an attempt to understand and express contemporary society, human beings, and their changing experiences. The organization believes in theatrical experiences that do more than entertain audiences; they should encourage them to think, feel, question, and engage in dialogue. The true strength of theatre lies in its live and direct interaction, where actors and audiences are present before one another at the same time and in the same space.
For Dastak, theatre is not an imitation of life, but a creative process of looking at and understanding life in new ways. It brings human joys and sorrows, struggles, sensitivities, inner conflicts, and collective experiences to the stage, while expanding the audience’s perspective and emotional awareness.
With its commitment to quality theatre, continuous training, the development of new talent, creative freedom, and social engagement, Dastak continues to work towards playing an active and meaningful role in the constantly evolving landscape of Indian theatre.
Among Dastak’s principal objectives are the regular and disciplined practice sessions conducted under the guidance of skilled and trained instructors in a meaningful and creative environment, continuous theatre training, regular theatrical productions, and the organization of workshops, theatre discussions, and other creative activities. Through initiatives such as ‘Rang-Dastak’ Theatre Festival, the organization also seeks to contribute to the development of an active and meaningful theatre culture.
Dastak currently operates from House of Variety, a cultural venue equipped with modern theatrical facilities.
Over the course of its journey, Dastak has trained and nurtured numerous artists. Many of them are today active in the fields of theatre and cinema, while others have established creative and professional identities in various other fields. The theatrical experience, discipline, and sensitivity acquired through Dastak can be clearly seen in their personalities and professional lives.
For Dastak, theatre is not merely the presentation of a play, but a continuous creative process of understanding human beings and society, developing sensitivity, and establishing a meaningful dialogue with the audience. The purpose of theatre is not limited to entertainment; it is a medium that connects human beings more deeply with their lives, society, and times. It awakens dormant sensitivities, enriches experience, raises questions, and develops new ways of seeing and understanding. Theatre encourages individuals to look within themselves while also observing the world around them with greater awareness, sensitivity, and discernment.
Dastak believes that meaningful theatre establishes a dialogue between thought and entertainment, sensitivity and experience, and art and life. It has the ability to transform the audience from passive spectators into aware, sensitive, and thoughtful participants. Theatre confronts us with the questions of our times, places us before uncomfortable questions, and creates possibilities for dialogue.
Ultimately, the purpose of theatre is not merely to tell a story on stage, but to make human beings more aware, sensitive, thoughtful, questioning, and humane in relation to their time and society—and to keep alive the consciousness that allows possibilities for dialogue, coexistence, and change to remain open.
