Actors Training Programme
Dastak Theatre, Patna has been committed to actor training as an integral part of its theatre practice. The training programme is designed to develop the actor as a complete theatre practitioner—one who is physically prepared, vocally expressive, intellectually engaged, emotionally sensitive and capable of working creatively within an ensemble.
Rather than limiting training to dialogue delivery or performance techniques, Dastak’s approach combines regular practice, theatre exercises, literary understanding, observation, improvisation and performance experience.
Training Philosophy
At Dastak, acting is understood as a continuous process of learning, observing, experiencing and discovering. An actor is not trained simply to “act” a character, but to understand the character, the text, the situation and the world in which the character exists.
The programme therefore works on the development of the body, voice, imagination, concentration, sensitivity, discipline and creative intelligence of the actor.
Core Areas of Training

Physical Training
Body awareness, flexibility, coordination, balance, movement, physical expression and the use of space.

Voice & Speech
Breathing, voice production, articulation, pronunciation, diction, modulation, rhythm, projection and expressive speech.

Acting & Characterization
Understanding situations and relationships, character development, emotional response, concentration, observation and truthful stage behavior.

Improvisation
Exercises that encourage spontaneity, imagination, presence of mind, listening and creative responses.

Text & Script Analysis
Reading and understanding plays, stories, poetry and other literary material, followed by exploration of their dramatic possibilities.

Sensitivity & Observation
Developing the actor’s ability to observe people, relationships, behavior and the world around them, and transform those observations into creative material.

Rhythm, Music & Movement
Working with rhythm, sur, lay, music and movement to develop coordination and a stronger sense of theatrical expression.

Ensemble & Theatre Practice
Learning to work collectively, listen to fellow actors, respect the rehearsal process and understand the collaborative nature of theatre.

Stage Discipline
Punctuality, regular practice, preparation, rehearsal discipline, responsibility and respect for fellow artists and the theatre space.

Performance-Based Learning
Training is connected with actual theatre-making. Participants get opportunities to apply their learning through rehearsals, scenes, exercises and stage productions.
Our Approach
Dastak believes that actor training cannot be completed through a short-term crash course alone. It requires sustained practice, exposure and continuous self-development.
The training therefore encourages participants to:
- Train the body
- Develop the voice
- Sharpen observation
- Expand imagination
- Understand literature and theatre
- Develop emotional and intellectual sensitivity
- Build confidence and concentration
- Work with discipline and commitment
- Learn through rehearsal and performance
From Training to Theatre
For Dastak, training and production are not separate activities. The rehearsal room becomes a space where actors learn by doing, experimenting, making mistakes, observing, correcting and discovering.
Through its long-term theatre practice and productions, Dastak provides actors with an environment in which training gradually becomes theatre practice and theatre practice becomes continued training.
Who Can Join?
The programme is suitable for young people, aspiring actors, theatre enthusiasts and those who wish to develop themselves through theatre. Previous stage experience is not necessarily required; commitment, regularity and willingness to learn are more important.
The Dastak Objective
To develop actors who are not merely performers, but thinking, sensitive, disciplined and creative theatre practitioners.
“Acting is not only about pretending to be someone else; it is also about discovering oneself through the experience of another life.”
